Created by Utkarshraj Atmaram, modified Februar 27, 2010 at 18:33:09 CET | This project has a total of 7 feature requests with 2 comments rated at 76 points | 7 unique implementers | Readiness: 1 features with at least three implementers rated at 35 points

gedit is the official text editor of the GNOME desktop environment. It is a powerful general-purpose editor with a clean, simple interface.

Gedit supports tabs, syntax highlighting, editing remote files, multilanguage spellchecking, and extensibility through plugins.

Add support for code folding

Code folding allows the users to selectively hide and display sections of a file. It's very helpful for users who manage large text files with several regions of complicated text.

Code folding is one of the important missing features in gedit. It is available in many other lightweight editors, such as SciTE.

Vertical Text selection

Vertical Text selection like in SciTE when Pressing CTRL while selecting text. Its a very useful feature to select, copy and paste 'colums' in textfiles. (like in sql-files for example)

Automatic line breaking

When typing long text in gedit line breaks have to be set manually. Afterwards, when editing the text, this results in long and short lines. The text looks ugly then.

So it would be nice, if gedit makes line breaks automatically after a specified number of columns (only between words, certainly).

However, there has to be a difference between line breaks that have been set manually and those that are introduced automatically. Don't confuse it with the line-warp feature, since these line breaks are not saved, and long lines (even if they are warped), are slowing down gedit quite a lot.

The same feature is implemented in the e-mail editor window of evolution.

non-intrusive CTRL+F

just like Firefox does, gedit should have a search bar that would not be intrusive like the current search dialog.

And also F3 key for (find next) should work even when the find dialog (or search bar) is closed.

Zoom text

A very nice feature is textzoom. In SciTE you can change the textsize by pressing CTRL+MOUSEWHEEL, or:

CTRL+NUMBLOCK_PLUS = increase textsize
CTRL+NUMBLOCK_MINUS = decrease textsize
CTRL+NUMBLOCK_DIV = reset textsize

This feature should be easy to implement and has a good advantage. (It's a very useful feature on a video projector.)

Add support for Macro recording

It would be nice, if gedit has a macro recorder with features like:
record, stop, play, multiple play (x times or 'to end of file'), save and assign a keyboard shortcut.

The opensource editor Notepad++ (for windows) has a good macro recorder: http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net
