OpenLieroX is an extremely addictive realtime Worms clone. It features online play, fully customizable weapons, levels and characters. Liero's 10+ years history formed a huge community around Liero/LieroX/OpenLieroX.

The game is based on a deathmatch setting, where multiple players face off in a closed level. Each player is equipped with five weapons selected out of all the weapons allowed, and with a ninja rope that allows the player to move in any direction. Players begin with a set amount of lives, and whilst the game records the number of kills, the last man standing is usually considered the winner. LieroX also allows team deathmatches, which has made it common for players to form clans.

Because of the huge community, there are dozens of levels and mods available. You also have no problem to find somebody on Internet to play with. Or if you want to play offline, you also can play highly improved bots.

Chaos Communication Camp 07
Working on OpenLieroX at CCC 07 :-)

Once upon a time there was a 14 years old boy who was terribly bored one afternoon. He was looking for some entertainment on the Internet and his eye sudently stopped at LieroX.
He downloaded it, double-clicked LieroX.exe and it crashed his computer. Thanks God he didn't give up and tried to run it again, successfully this time.

Few months later he found out what "addictive" meant in the LieroX download description. Spending many hours practising with other players he was getting annoyed by the crashes and other bugs in LieroX.

Later, when LieroX became open source he bought a C++ book and dived into the coding...

I am a 20-year-old programmer from a little country in the Central Europe. My real name is Karel Petránek.

In late 2006 me and albert founded the OpenLieroX project which is a successor of LieroX, a simple, yet addictive 2-D shooter game.

In august 2007 I together with albert represented the OpenLieroX project on the Chaos Communication Camp in Finowfurt, Germany.

In the code I mostly focus on the user interface and graphics part and closely co-work with our main designer, Michal Futer.

After Jason Boettcher dropped the project LieroX and released its source, Karel (DarkC) and me grabbed it and formed the OpenLieroX project.

My first aim at this time was to port it to Linux, though I got more and more interest in the project and thus, we worked both a lot on OpenLieroX, developed a huge list of new features, overworked the whole engine a lot and I ported it also to MacOSX. Up to now, the project has doubled in size.

While the project was growing, other developers like Griffin and Pelya or very lastly also Jonanin have joined us. And we also got much help by the already existing LieroX community for its levels and mods and also for example the OpenLieroX design by Raziel.
