The GIMP

Created by Brian, modified November 12, 2008 at 16:44:46 CET | This project has a total of 10 feature requests with 21 comments rated at 472 points | 6 unique implementers | Readiness: 1 features with at least three implementers rated at 91 points

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

Improve UI

GIMP's GUI is rather disrupting to your workflow when using it. It'd be nice to see it combined into one windows, with tabs, with some touchups here and there.

2008-07-27 13:57 Michael Schumacher Keep in mind that UI changes should be evaluated by our UI specialists. This is a process which may require multiple iterations, and sometimes even a development release just to see how the changes work out. Doubtful that this goes together with a 24h time frame.

2008-07-26 20:00 Visvo Well, this is a very good feature. no matter if this team will be elected to the contest. i'm always neverd if a windowpart is covered by the explorer or a browser. Its just nice to have everything in one mainwindow. Maybe with some dockingfunctions...

2008-07-03 14:24 Niko Kiirala I've seen (in LGM) there are plenty of good plans on improving GIMP UI, like making the tool palette smaller and less cluttered. Thumbs up for them.

86

CMYK support

It would be nice to manipulate CMYK images in GIMP. This feature would be great for GIMP popularity and for community.

2008-07-26 21:40 Ghul I have not much expirience in this area of coding. But it would be great if someone try to get in this! The GIMP-Project still needs more implementer to get to the contest.

2008-07-11 23:39 robert this does NOT seem to be a 24h job.

2008-07-07 18:21 Alexander Here is the reply of main GEGL maintainer Øyvind Kolås in gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU : http://www.mail-archive.com/gimp-user%40lists.xcf.berkeley.edu/msg14962.html

2008-07-03 14:06 Niko Kiirala Considering that this has been a long-standing issue with GIMP, could this really be archieved during Hackontest? Also, I'd figure this is somewhat redundant, as there is also the "Implementing GEGL" feature request.

2008-06-29 17:48 farid cmyk support is very inportant for proffesional use.

77

Layer's folders

I dreaming about this feature for a long time... It's very hard to manage 20-50 layers without layer's folders. This would be very useful...

2008-10-23 09:43 ademmer Was this project completed and will be available for GIMP soon? I hope for the best! :)

2008-07-27 14:02 Michael Schumacher Doing this right might take more than 24h. Maybe if someone has a specification ready before starting to code, it might be possible.

2008-07-13 17:26 maxim For the realization propose to use the names of layers. Do not require correction format and backward compatibility will continue

64

Implementing GEGL

The main development focus right now is on implementing GEGL (Generic Graphics Library) into GIMP, so that more features may be added on.

2008-07-27 13:54 Michael Schumacher This feature description is rather generic, and I doubt that anything large can be done in 24h. One of the things that might be done is speed improvements in GEGL, which is the bottleneck right now.

2008-07-15 06:39 Carlos.Sosa indeed, high priority

2008-06-13 21:18 Петр it`s most important implementation; GGGGGGEGL!

39

Ability to create brushes

It would be nice to have the feature to create brush strokes freely rather than the three default options availabe (square, circle and rhombus).

2008-07-27 14:01 Michael Schumacher For anything more fancy than the three options, you can create a greyscale image and use this as your brush. Using SVG as brushes had been discussed as a possible GSoC project, but discarded. If someone knows what to do, writing a new brush class might be manageable in a 24h time frame.

31

Ink density management in The Gimp

There must be a management tool and checking the density of ink, which are similar to Color management and Info palette in Photoshop. This will raise the value of The Gimp for professional pre-press

2008-07-27 13:51 Michael Schumacher This sounds rather like something one would introduce into the gimp-print plug-in, which is part of the gutenprint packages. GIMP itself aims for basic printing support, leaving anything beyond this to more specialized applications.

28

transformation tool

the transform tools should respect the layer mode and transperancy settings. fix that, and i will uninstall photoshop for good

2008-07-27 13:50 Michael Schumacher This is the only project I see as manageable in a 24h time frame, if the goal is inclusion in future GIMP releases.

2008-07-16 23:50 Greywolf If you mean that the layer should not suddenly go opaque when you resize/shear/perspex it, then YES, I'm sure for this one!

25

basic color correction tools as a layer

1) it would be nice to have color correction tools as a layerstyle.
2) unlinking the layer mask from the rgb picture, so that one can move the color information, without changing the layer mask
3) right click into the document should bring up only tool specific items (with the brush tool, brush size, opacity,etc..)

2008-07-27 14:04 Michael Schumacher Seems to be more than one feature request wrapped into this entry. In Bugzilla, we close this as invalid. Let's focus on the title: this is what GEGL is capable of. But moving the internal representation of an image in GIMP to a gegl-based one is not something for a 24h time frame.

18

MacOSX Aqua Interface

Currently Gimp can be lauched on MacOSX using X, but native MacOSX Aqua Interface will be more useful.

2008-07-27 14:06 Michael Schumacher For this to happen, you'll have to work on GTK+, not GIMP. See http://developer.imendio.com/projects/gtk-macosx/ for the results of the initial effort, and the TODOs still left. Some of them might be suitable for a 24h time frame.

13

Ability to freely distort layers / selections

That's the point where I always have to use Photoshop: when I try to correct a selected object by picking the handles with the mouse and move them freely to where I want.
(not like the perspective tool in gimp, where always one axis is locked)
Is it that hard to implement something like that?

2008-07-27 14:08 Michael Schumacher The big challenge I see here is the user interaction. If a specification for this is available, then a 24h time frame might be reasonable.
